Busi enhances sock toe-closing options on Rimaglio system

Brescia – Sock knitting machine specialist Busi Giovanni has enhanced the performance of its Rimaglio technology, the renowned, automatic, stitch-by-stitch toe-closing device.

The Brescia-based firm says it is constantly looking to improve the reliability and versatility of the Rimaglio technology. This latest upgrade means it is now possible to knit the last course of stitches all around the item’s body, effectively 360 degrees.

This method means that the sock manufacturer can fix the end part of a tube, with both a single welt or a double one, to prevent it from unwinding.

This third version of the Rimaglio system is located on the left-hand side of the machine, which means the knitting technician still has full accessibility to the knitting head.

The sequential operation of the new device starts with the yarn finger head being raised when sock knitting has been completed. The cylinder then stops in a pick-up position with the help of a mechanical clutch.

The knitting head is then raised and the toe-closing device swings across and aligns itself exactly above the cylinder needles. It is then lowered to a position where pick-up elements position themselves precisely onto these needles. Individual knitted loops are then transferred from the cylinder needles on to the toe-closing device. The sock is then picked up and the arm swings the device back into its position underneath the tubular sock-turning piston on the left-hand side of the machine. The knitting head is closed again and knitting of the next sock commences.

As knitting of the next sock commences, the completed sock is pushed upwards and turned inside out by a sock-turning tube. This means stitching of the toe occurs on the inside of the sock to replicate traditional linking.

Next, two half-crowns, on which the last knitted course is located, close like a jaw superimposing the two halves of the sock toe on top of each other. Loops from the two separate courses are placed on the same comb. At this point, the sock toe is ready to be stitched closed, and the linking-device starts up sewing the toe area of the sock fabric with stitch-for-stitch linking. Needles pass through the loop twice to give a secure stitch and improve the elasticity of the seam.

Busi Giovanni marks 60 years of success


Family-run Italian hosiery knitting machine builder Busi Giovanni is marking its 60th anniversary this year, after a number of changes were made to the management of the company, following the passing of its founder Giovanni Busi just two weeks after the passing of his beloved son Gianmario in June last year.

The company, which has specialised in the design and construction of single-cylinder machines with rib needles in the dial for the production of high-quality stockings, socks and tights since 1958, is currently implementing many internal changes, with young minds of Leonardo and Francesco, nephews of Catina Busi, General Manager of Busi Giovanni, now fully on board.

Knitting Industry spoke to Catina Busi about the company’s heritage and success, its main ambitions, and its plans for the future, including the introduction of new production monitoring software for its customers.

Are you planning to mark the company’s 60th anniversary?

Catina Busi: Sincerely, after losing my father and my brother only a few months ago, we prefer not celebrating our 60th anniversary with parties or similar events, but maybe with a glass of Italian Franciacorta sparkling wine, to be sipped by me with my two beloved nephews Leonardo and Francesco, surrounded by all of our collaborators, making a toast to life and a positive future for our company.

What do you believe has made the company so successful for so many years?

CB: Our mission is simple: we exclusively want to make single-cylinder sock-knitting machines capable of making perfect, top-quality, beautiful, resistant, unique socks. Not only… these machines must be terribly solid, reliable, long-lasting and don’t have to require lots of money in maintenance, spare part replacements and so on. A customer must get bored, after thirty years using them, three shifts a day, and decide to give them away – not because they are not working well any more.

To achieve this, we do not consider of primary importance the purchase prices of the components we use to build them, but their effectiveness, reliability and duration: in other words, our machines are made by just the best components available in the international supply markets. I am pretty sure our customers understand this philosophy, this deeply-rooted mission of ours, and choose us because they only want machines with these features, otherwise they would go to other anyhow qualified and good suppliers, considering that we are the most expensive in the market.

These differences, these perceptions, are in my opinion the real reason of our success and longevity.

How important do you think your company’s heritage and the Made in Italy label are to your customers?

CB: Terribly important: we not only are Italians, we are from Botticino, the town where Francesco Lonati was born, where our family-friend Ettore Lonati lives and where, all in all, the excellence technology and the unique know-how of the Italian sock-knitting industry itself was born.

My father and my whole family were born here, we all live in this place: sufficient elements to be proud of belonging to our splendid country and to Botticino especially. We will never go abroad, my brother and I had never thought, even for a second, to go abroad: our production must stay here, with our fantastic men manufacturing our machines every day, with the same commitment and passion. It is like with Ferrari, or Maserati – who would like to buy a dream-car like these made in a country that were not Italy?

I understand the company had to undergo a number of internal changes last year, with your two nephews, Leonardo and Francesco, taking more active roles in the factory’s running. How are they doing?

CB: I must admit I was much more concerned and pessimistic, last year, when it all happened, in June, then Leonardo and Francesco proved to me I was completely wrong, since they are so serious, effective, professional, that, really, I cannot believe they are just 27 and 26 years old. Leonardo has a degree as Industrial Engineer, whereas Francesco is going to soon get his degree in Electronic Engineering, both competences that will bring added value to all that had already been done and consolidated by their father, over so many years.

Among the three of us, I am so pleased to ascertain that, a beautiful and magical synergy has taken place, during these past months working side by side, every single day, magnificently binding and mixing my thirty-five years of experience, running this company, with their liveliness and impetus towards innovation, inherent to their young ages.

For God’s sake, as long as gorgeous my nephews may be, this company would be simply nothing without the whole team of my collaborators: we have recently hired a new outstanding Operations Manager, who is guiding the whole factory in a wise, experienced and evidently effective way, not forgetting that all of my guys, here, are special, in terms of experience and technical skills, difficult to replace, difficult to find new ones to increase our production capacity. So, my nephews are in very good hands indeed: my main collaborators are making them grow, gradually, constantly and very positively, eventually, so my last year’s concerns have disappeared forever.

What is your vision of the future of the company?

CB: We want to spread and reinforce our company’s reputation, even more than today, in every market of the world. We are not interested in selling thousands of machines, this is not what we want, this would not be coherent with our mission: we want every sock maker to think of us as the high-end “tailors” of single-cylinder sock-knitting machines.

Whenever they needed to make any special productions, particularly elegant or sophisticated items for important, prestigious customers, they should think of Busi as the preferred machinery choice: this is the best future perspective I can figure out for my company.

At the beginning of the year, you introduced a new sock design service to your customers. Has it proved successful?

CB: It was actually appreciated, we received several requests already. Nevertheless, the aim was not at all to collect a thousand orders, but rather to tell our customers we tend to do anything to help them, to support and please them, even in fields not directly connected with machine deliveries, technical assistance and so on.

“Aren’t you experienced in conceiving new sock articles? No problem, we can make your life easier from that point of view too” …that was the message and the purpose. By the way, I take the chance to add that, nearly twenty years after the release of our current production monitoring software named SK-MON, we are now about to release the new one, named Busi Control Tower, which will offer our customers a large range of new performances, much more coherent with the nowadays’ requirements a sock maker is compelled to meet on a daily basis.


Machine builder introduces portfolio at ITM

For years, Mahlo has been an integral part of the Turkish textile market. Of course, the German machine builder is also taking part in one of the country’s most important trade fair, the ITM in Istanbul. From 14 to 17 April 2018, Sales Director Thomas Höpfl and Area Sales Manager Adnan Andac together with partner agency Masters Limited introduce the latest technologies in weft straightening and process control.


With its modular systems for weft-straight goods and optimized processes around the stenter frame, Mahlo exactly meets the demands of quality-oriented Turkish textile producers. The focus therefore lies on the automatic weft straightener Orthopac RVMC-15 and the process control system Optipac VMC-15 among others. Hardly surprising that the booth is alive! Nonetheless, the Mahlo-team takes time to answer individual questions and present the appropriate application for the particular circumstances.

Mahlo introduces quality control system for plastics industry at Chinaplas

Chinaplas, the biggest trade fair for plastics and rubber in Asia is expecting more than 3.400 exhibitioners and 150.000 visitors in 2018. The exhibition has become an important meeting point for this industrial branch. The Mahlo GmbH with China Chief representative Frank Fei welcomes the visitors at booth 2 J 13 to present the portfolio of quality and process control systems.

China’s plastics industry is growing fast. Automobile, domestic appliances, agriculture, building, electrical-electronic industry, light industry and military industry are the branches most interested in modified plastics. In the process, the demand for high quality products is constantly rising. For this development, Mahlo GmbH + Co. KG has the right answer. With proven “made in Germany” manner, the machine builder offers a quality control systems that allows new standards for plastic producers.

Perfect products must fulfill two conditions: being of high quality and cost-friendly. That can be reached by having the correct composition as well as the predefined parameters. “With the Qualiscan QMS, Mahlo offers renowned on-line measure and control solutions for film thickness, application or moisture of coating”, says Frank Fei. The modular system impresses with a broad portfolio of measuring frames in different sizes and sensors for almost every requirement. “Because exactly controlled and regulated process parameters not only improve fabric quality and plant utilization but also save energy and resources”, so Fei further.

The Qualiscan QMS measures material thickness during production. The methods used here are quite diverse. The coating thickness of almost all materials can be calculated with beta, infrared or X-rays, which penetrate the product or are reflected by it. Also for especially thin films or transparent materials, with which other systems reach their limit, Mahlo has apt sensors available.

If the manufacturer is able to check his specifications, he has already established the basis for his success. Only when the exact values are known can they also be correctly controlled thereby optimising the production processes. At Chinaplas, visitors can learn how to protect the environment and their wallet at the same time.


Mahlo showcases at IndoIntertex and Saigontex

For a long time, the Asian tiger states are trying to tie up with China’s economic success. And in many aspects, they have achieved just that today: Indonesia is probably the most diverse country with regard to ethnic groups. No surprise with 255 million inhabitants spread among the world’s largest island archipelago. If a Muslim Aceh from the West met up with a native from the East that would be much more exciting than a Bavarian meeting an East Frisian.

As exciting is also the situation in the textile market: The internal market alone is huge. Corresponding to that, over the last few decades capacities have been built up whose best years are now almost over. The need for replacement investments is growing every month but the political situation still is an impediment for the clients’ investment plans. Next year, elections are held. Hopes are that those bring the desired safety and that Indonesian investments are not strangled by politics.

The IndoIntertex, held from 4 to 7 April for an interested expert audience, took up those topics: most talks revolved around cost saving and service; with new investments, the price was the main focus. Yet, one could feel that the textile industry is preparing for the moment when the next generation of machines brings a fresh breeze into textile production. And Mahlo with its innovative solutions will be ready for this time.

Updraft in Vietnam 

Quite different are the circumstances in Vietnam: due to cleverly chosen trade agreements the country is in the upswing touristically and economically. Many well-known companies lately have invested in new production sites and continue to do that. One indicator is also the hustle and bustle on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. Mass tourism has discovered the exotic country and replaced the backpackers to a great extent. Compared to Thailand or the direct neighbour Cambodia, Vietnam has gotten quite expensive. Rents and real estate prices in the big cities have reached European standards and at some places you pay more for one beer than you do at the “Bayerische Hof” in Munich. Nevertheless, wage costs are still on an attractive level for the Vietnamese textile industry, which make the products extremely valuable for export.

Because of the latest investments, Vietnam is well equipped with modern machines – a lot of them by Mahlo – and therefore can offer high quality products at attractive prices. The success of the Saigontex trade fair confirms this development. The local Mahlo agency Thach Anh Vang, who again has prepared a perfectly organized booth, benefits from that. To ensure the quality of the Vietnamese products in the future, the focus this year lies on process control. Among different sensors, the Optipac system as well as the basis weight management system Famacont PMC is showcased. With those, Mahlo will make a major contribution to Vietnam’s growth.
