Mahlo-Team learned how to extinguish a fire safely
A discarded cigarette stub, an afterglow in the grill or flying sparks: especially during dry, hot summer days one inattentive moment can cause a fire. With a special fire drill, Mahlo employees had the chance to learn how to act correctly in an emergency.
“Reacting quickly and properly can prevent worse things”, says Norbert Thom, fire prevention officer at Mahlo. Even a little fire can spread quickly and become an inferno within minutes. “Many people don’t have the courage to extinguish the fire because they are afraid or don’t know how”. To erase this insecurity, Mahlo officials had organised the fire drill. With a fire training system – provided by Freiwillige Feuerwehr Saal a.d. Donau – Thom introduces his colleagues to the correct handling of a fire extinguisher. A big part of the company’s staff didn’t miss the chance. Thom did not only describe different types of extinguishers and extinguishing agents but also explained the correct behaviour when putting out the fire. Fighting the flames downwind, from front to back and at its most energised point are the most important rules. And first and foremost: never put yourself in danger! If one assess the situations as too risky, better call the local fire department under 112.
Mahlo-CEO Rainer Mestermann set a good example at the drill: courageously, he took a fire extinguisher and fought against the flames. He had to realise they were not ready to give in easily. Based on this experience, the more important is the fire drill, he thinks: “Our employees’ safety is always first. In order to prepare them for the exceptional situation ‘fire’, no matter whether in work or personal life, we organised the fire drill.” A special thanks also goes to the FFW Saal a.d. Donau for their support.
